SPARKLE LABS DISCOVER ELECTRONICS KIT! MARK H. 1/01/10

When I was kid I loved experimenting with electronics. I would go out and buy the individual parts and manuals at Radio Shack for my projects I would spend a lot of time finding the items that I needed to complete my experiments, which was a lot of work. But with Sparkle Lab's Discover Electronics kit everything you need to start building your own circuits is included in one box.
Organization:

One of my favorite things about this kit is it's organization of the indivisual components. Each type of component is in it's own labeled envelope with a picture of the component and corresponding schematic symbol. The envelopes make it easy to pick out the exact type of component you want without searching through a mass of tangled parts.

Contents:
The kit includes a instruction book, breadboard, and over 130 parts that you can start using immediately. The projects in the booklet require a 9V battery that is not included with the kit.
The Manual:
The Thirty-Two page manual is colorfully illustrated with schematics and detailed drawings of the circuits. The manual starts out with a basic power supply which each successive project builds upon.

The manual goes over transistors, capacitors, and resistors with corresponding projects of their use. The instructions are easy to understand and provide a basis for which you can expand upon.

It's great to find a product that brings all of these things together in one place. Sparkle Lab's Discover Electronics kit is a hit.

DARK HORSE NEWS: "MY NAME IS BRUCE" BRUCE CAMPBELL ACTION FIGURE! 10/26/09

The head is scanned from Bruce's own noggin, and a pretty good job they did. The cotume is spot on with the Hawaiian shirt colorful to the point of distraction. The pattern is great and the figure seems to be packed with fun.

Accessories:
First off you have the Devil and Angel that are magnetized and sit nicely on Bruce's shoulders, trying to either keep him in or get him out of a jam.
Bruce is armed with a .45 that still sports its price tag, a bottle of Shemp's Olde Tyme Whiskey, a bottle of refreshing lemon water, an Army of Darkness action figure and a miniature mock up of Bruce's book: If Chins Could Kill.
This cult favorite is going to be a hit with any Campbell fan,

This box set of figures all have sharp paint, and are sculpted wonderfully. The articulation is a little bit limited, but the lines of the figures are touching on beautiful. The capes are pliant plastic which helps in posing. Wonder Woman's Lasso of Truth made from softgoods instead of being molded plastic. Green Lantern comes complete with his iconic lantern. All figures come with black circular bases.

HOT TOYS IRON MEN! Capt. Collector's look at Marvel's metalhead! 10/14/09
OK, OK, everyone knows that Hot Toys is the undisputed heavyweight champ of 12" figures. Right now it's just a fight for 2nd place, it's that simple. If you have the means, I cannot reccomend any toy more right now. They elevated the genre to an art form. seen here are the Mark I, that Tony Stark built - in a cave - with a box of scraps! Take a look at all the detailing, the paint, the wires, the real mini electricians' tape, it's all there. The Mark II is a pretty silver, and is almost identical to the previously reviewed Mark III, but now with all the appropriate bolts, new head with flip-up face plate, and "Proof that Tony Stark has a Heart". The exclusive edition is a gun metal grey version only availabe at this year's San Diego Comicon from Sideshow Toys. The pictures tell the whole story, other than that it's long gone now. Seriously, if you're A fan, you won't be dissapointed.

KOTOBUKIYA'S MARVEL BISHOUJO BLACK WIDOW STATUE! Rating: * * * * * 9/19/09

This is a piece I've waited for most of this year. I've posted videos of this well before I ever got it in my grubby little hands, and it's a beauty. Bishoujo is known as the "pretty girl" art style, and this piece lives up to it's name. Black Widow is stunning. Her action pose, the sprayed on clothes she is just amazing.
The belt is a separate piece and is emblazoned with the red hourglass on the buckle. Her aubrurn hair is swirling above her head giving one the impression that she's running down stairs, golden bracelets on her wrists, her pistol at the ready. As I stated before her charms are barely hidden by the skin tight costume she wears, enough to make any fanboy
quiver!
The paint is exquisite and the sculpt is just plain wonderful Yu Ishii has really sculpted a wonderful statue.
Comes in a window box
I can't wait to see more Bishoujo style statues come from Kotobukiya. If the Black Widow is any indication of what we can expect, then there should be a mass of happy geeks running around.
GO HERO: BUCK ROGERS 1/6 SCALE FIGURE! 9/15/09
Stepping our of the past and into the future is Buck Rogers. Debuting in John F. Dille's syndicated comic strip in 1928, Buck thrust the American people into a future filled with aliens, robots and spaceships the likes they had never imagined before.
Buck Rogers is a former engineer and accomplished military pilot from the 21st Century who is frozen/preserved in suspended animation and awakens 500 years into the future to a world altered by scientific advances and a nation under siege by alien invasion. Buck quickly encounters Wilma Deering and Dr. Huer and joins Earth's military defense force. Buck's good friend is scientist Dr. Huer, the 1920’s equivalent of James Bond’s Q. Dr. Huer creates and hones the technological wonders that inhabit Buck's world.
Buck is not overwhelmed by the technological wonders of the 25th Century and quickly adapts. He soon proves himself to be an effective warrior and leader, becoming highly respected among his new peers. He has the acting rank of Captain (his rank in the 21st Century). Buck has a commanding charisma. He is a secret operative, an intelligence officer, a fighter pilot and head of the elite 'Rocket Rangers'. Buck is not superhuman. He's an extremely intelligent and brave young man who combats forces of interplanetary evil on a regular basis by utilizing his brain as much as his ability -- relying more on his own skill-set than on 25th Century gadgetry.
Buck is honest, good-humored, and his courage borders on recklessness. He is very self-assured and confident to the point of being cocky about his own abilities. Buck is very patriotic towards America (and Earth) no matter what century it is. Buck has a strong knowledge of military tactics -- but he will always 'stick up for the little guy' regardless of the situation -- often operating as a free agent in the name of oppressed people(s) everywhere. He is always conscious of his duty, but he is a maverick and will overstep his authority and orders to 'do what is right'.
Wilma Deering, his highly respected female companion in adventure adores him. Much to Wilma's dismay, she must compete for Buck's affection with a cadre of other women -- Ardala Valmar, Flame D'Amour, Thavia of Venus, Tiki of Eldonia and the beautiful Doctor Merberec of Uranus among many others.
But not everyone adores Buck Rogers. The insidious Kane and Ardala (who's infatuated with Buck), hate him and all that he represents with an undying passion. Buck is constantly countering their various schemes to rule Earth and ultimately the Universe.
Packaging:
Buck comes encased in a solid maple wood box with laser etched writing on the front and back. The box lid also has the edition number etched into it. The lid slides off and reveals the figure and accessories inside a vacuform plastic sleeve. Sandwiched in on the front clear panel rests the Certificate of Authenticity.
Note, check the back of the sleeve and retrieve the USB cable... More on this later.)
Figure:
The facial sculpt is clean with good paint ops, no smudges or ripples. The figure comes with hands attached which are removeable, and can be replaced with gloved hands.
Ungloved or gloved the pistol fits firmly in the right hand of our hero. The left hand is flat giving it a good karate chopping look, the gloved left hand is formed into a fist.
Great for knocking about unruly robots and such.
The body is wonderfully articulated, especially in the legs where Buck can kneel with ease.
The figure holds poses easily, and the costume fits nicely on the frame.
Costume / Accessories:
Buck comes in a long sleeve knit red shirt with leather-like vest with a die cast metal detail on the chest.
He wears tan jodhpurs (riding pants) and has tall boots also made from the supple leather-like plastic.
His belt is black with a die-cast buckle, leather-like holster with die-cast laser pistol. If you look closely, you can see the intricate design set into the holster. Just another sign of the overall quality and attention to detail in this figure. The die-cast pistol is also a favorite of mine. The finish and weight of the gun add to the value of this piece.
For his head he has a glass space-helmet with die-cast details or a faux leather flying helmet with a clear 2 position visor. The helmet is just amazing. I had heard that some of the delays were due to problems with the helmet, but whatever problems there were have all been resolved. The glass is clear and solid feeling. It just oozes the love that went into this product. It's just beautiful.
He has a gold colored jet pack with electronic light effects on the exhaust nozzles which light up red when the button under the pack is pressed.
The pack hook slips neatly in Buck's vest and is very stable.
ATOMedia Body:
This is one of the coolest features on this figure. ATOMedia is a 1 gig MP3 player that can record sounds or you can upload recordings from your computer. The battery is rechargeable with the USB cable (included) and the figures coming directly from GO HERO have a remote so you can trigger your figure to play from 25 feet away. An old Buck Rogers radio show is pre-loaded into the player. Now not only can you display this figure, but you can make the collecting experience more interactive. The feature doesn't change to outward appearance of the figure, and makes Buck's figure truly from the future.
Go Hero has made a exceptional figure with Buck Rogers. True to the Golden Age artwork, retro styling and futuristic features. The care in his design and execution shines through in every way. This figure belongs in your collection.
CLONE WARS: Y-WING BOMBER REVIEW! Rating: * * * * * 9/12/09
After my Millennium Falcon my most favorite ship in the Star Wars universe was the vintage Y-Wing fighter. Awesome in it's detail, flip up canopy, rotating ion cannons, retractable landing fear, dropping bomb and a socket for your trusty Astromech droid. Of course the late Seventies and early Eighties had their limits (i.e. the whirring sound effect, sort of like a cat swallowing a joy-buzzer.) The thing was a geeks dream come true.
Fast forward nearly thirty years and a new generation is about to be floored witht he Clone Wars version of this sturdy fighter/bomber.
Packaging:
Boxed in the red and white color scheme of 2009 Star Wars product the box boasts a diorama can be made from the box to display your Y-Wing. One thing about the size of the box is that it hides the true size of this large ship.
Assembly:
Assembly is straight forward, just slip the engine nacelles on, mount the missle blocks into the flip up panels on the topside of the ship and snap in the missles and bombs. There is a decal sheet but aside from the instrument panel label the rest of the stickers are basically white blocks of color to postition around the hull. Nothing to it.
Paint:
The ship is an overall off white plastic with yellow stripes. There is a gray panel in the rear and gray tips to the forward blasters, the interior weapons bay is a silver gray. The paint scheme has some missing paint but there is no weathering to speak of. There are Republic seals on either engine nacelle.
Features:
Two proton torpedoes mounted under the chin, two bombs nestled in the belly of the ship and 4 missles mounted on the hidden flip up weapon pods mounted on the upper hull. (Missiles can be stored in the missle bay when not in use.)
The missle release buttons are all on the top hull of the ship. The rear button flips up the "wings" holding the weapon pods, each missle is fired independently from the buttons on the pods. Flanking the droid socket to the rear are two more buttons to release the Proton bombs from the belly. Finally, to either side of the rear cockpit/turret are two more buttons to relaase the chin Proton torpedoes. The only button placement which is a little bit troublesome as it is very easy to inadvertently fire the chin missiles when opening the turret. Not a big concern, but it does exist.
Another point of slight dissatisfaction is the turret, it doesn't rotate and the guns are fixed in place, not a huge blunder, but I was expecting at least a rotating turret.
Ahsoka will have to sit on her helmet or backpack to have her head reach up into the turret, but regular Clones will fit just fine.
Finally, a socket for an Astromech droid!
I never understood why Hasbro went away from the vintage design. Imagine, selling a vehicle that you WANTED to buy another figure to make it complete.
Instead they put in the little rotating head, which sucked! What if you wanted R5 instead of an R2? Now with the plethora of Build A Droid figures you can have your choice, and change your mind if you wish.
The tri-cycle landing gear is very solid, the vintage model suffered from sag sometimes, so this is a welcome change.
Overall impressions:
I very great reboot to the Y-Wing. This one dwarfs its predecessor with size as well as tons more features. It's big and it's durable.
Cockpits fit pretty much any Star Wars figure with some nice detailing like the yoke in front of the pilot. It's the little things that make a big difference. While it's not perfect it's PDC (pretty darn close.)
This would be a great addition to any Clone Wars or Star Wars collection!
HASBRO: G.I. JOE: RISE OF COBRA ALPHA VEHICLE TOYS! Rating: * * * * * 7/31/09
Here's some of the contents of the big Joe box from Hasbro!
UPDATED: VIDEO OF BOX CONTENTS!

Here are the Alpha Wave of vehicles. One thing that really makes me happy as a collector and parent is that Hasbro haa continued their tradition of including action figures with their smaller vehicles. It's always gratifying to have a dedicated figure thrown in with the vehicle. The price points are very affordable, and it's complete. (Great for gift-giving.)
The Alpha vehicles include:

One of my favorite vehicles from this wave, as it has a nice large cockpit that easily accomodates the pilot figure, and as you push the vehicle forward the drill at the front end rotates. Yeah, it's simple, but ultimately very cool. There is a firing missle at the tip of the drill also.

The fixed tread armored vehicle sports a quad gun mounted on a rotating turret, Sgt. Thunderblast has a removeable helmet, there are two firing missles on either side of the vehicle.

Tracked snowmobile with two firng missles on the front steerable runners, swept back cockpit hinges forward to allow Snow Job figure to fit inside. Snow Job comes with pistol that fits into holster, removeable goggles and parka hood.
The Snake Trax is a ATV quad with a large side mounted missle launche that flips up to fire. The front wheels are steerable and the vehicle sports a gun turret in front.

These vehicles all come with detail stickers that are easily applied and the missles all seem to pack pretty good whallops! The younger set loves firing missles to take down the enemy forces. It leads to some dynamic play patterns.
Overall the action figures have very good articlulation and as I stated earlier the addition of these figures in packages is a god-send for those looking to outfit their forces, affordably.
I can tell that this line is growing on me as I have already started collecting single carded figures on my own.
If the movie can bring in the kids, and collectors, the toys will keep them happy until the sequel hits.
KOTOBUKIYA NEWS: EMI KIZAKI AND DAIJIRO FROM LINEBARRELS OF IRON! 5/26/09
As one of the pilots of the awesome mecha Linebarrels, Emi Kazaki uses the robot as a force for the secret agency known as Juda. The lovely Emi reclines on the ground, her right arm supporting her as her left holds up her swimsuit top against her chest. The straps have come loose, and her arm is all that maintains her modesty as a small stuffed animal peeks up from between her busoms. Sculpted by Sho Kojima, Emi is 3 1/2-inches tall reclined, in 1:8-scale. The beauty comes packaged in an attractive window box, and is made of plastic.
KOTOBUKIYA ANI-STATUE - OCTAVIA! 5/12/09

A KOTOBUKIYA Japanese import! Tears to Tiara: Kakan no Daichi (”Earth’s Wreath”) is a brand-new role-playing game for the PlayStation 3, based on 2005’s Tears to Tiara. From this modern classic (and upcoming anime series!) comes the second figure (after the heroine Riannon), the warrior OCTAVIA!
The fierce aristocrat is posed responding to danger, her twisting upper body flailing her long hair behind her. Octavia’s long legs are widespread for balance, and she reaches for her weapon with one hand on her scabbard. Her awesome sword can be placed in her right hand or in the scabbard. In her crouching stance Octavia is 7 1/2 inches tall (1/8th scale) and sculpted by Hirotoshi Nakamura.

STAR TREK MOVIE FIGURES AND PLAYSETS! 5/03/09
Galaxy scale which are 3 3/4" scale which fit well with vehicles and playsets. Warp series figures, 6" scale figures and the Command size figures: 12" figures geared mostly for collectors.
Galaxy figures:

Packaging:
The package is shaped much like a Starfleet insignia worn on the uniforms of the characters. The cards are universal, and only differ with the sticker on the front which explains who the character is and what accessories are enclosed. Each figure comes with an enclosed bonus piece that adds to the Enterprise bridge playset, but more on that later.
The card back shows all 10 of the first release figures, along with a diagram of the bridge and the placement of the additional bridge pieces fit.

Figures:
14 points of articulation: swivel head, ball jointed shoulders, elbows, knees and feet. Swivel hands, waist, and hips.

The worst of the joints would have to be the hips. They restrict the movement of the legs as to make only a couple of poses possible. The figures are well balanced and stand on their own with no problem at all.
Deatail: The sculpts are pretty good, I especially liked the Spock.

The face is instantly recognizable as the stoci Vulcan.
The uniforms are pretty straight forward and they look like what I've been able to see on the movie trailers.

Paint:
Slight paint slop on some of the heads of the figures was noted, although colors were good, some of the small details such as the wrist piping were a nice touch. There was a nice paint op on the utility belt where the communicator sits. It was nice to see that Playmates would go the extra mile to include a paint detail for the face of the communicator.

Accessories:

Figures come with phasers, utility belt (with holster) a Starfleet base (which can also be used as a shirt pin). Additional pieces for the bridge, some include a chair as well. The panels have stickers for the specific instruments and the chairs come in red and blue. Note: the Uhura figure and the Nero figures come with accessories that fit witht he transporter room.
Spock comes with an additional hand making the "Live long and Prosper" sign.
Overall:
As toys these will be fun for kids to re-enact scenes from the movie, and are not as expensive as some other figures on the market these days. I would have liked to have seen better articulation like we've seen on Star Wars figures for the past couple of years, but the figures are durable and will take kid abuse and be in demand after the movie opens.
Retail price approximately $6.99 each.
Overall rating: * * *1/2
Enterprize Bridge Playset:

This piece was the one I was waiting to see for the lognest time. The box contains a vinyl playmat, the helm unit with two chairs, and the captain's chair. A main screen with graphic and two standing panel units.
The playset includes a Kirk figure which is essentially the same as the Kirk single pack figure, without the additional bridge piece of course.

Assembly is straight forward and should be completed in several minutes, even without instructions.

The vinyl playmat comes folded and rolled, so I covered it between two towels and a heating pad set to LOW for a couple minutes which made it easier to handle and let it lay flat on the table.
Details:
I like the modular feature of this playset so that you can add as many or as few features as you wish. There are no other bells and whistles to this playset, and that leaves it open for a child's imagination to take off.
Overall:
Fun for kids, would have like to see a special version of Kirk and maybe another background for the Main Screen. Otherwise a solid toy buy and a neat place to display your collection of Star Trek figures.
Transporter Room:
I have to admit that I was a little less than excited about this playset, but it has become one of my favorites. Once more the vinyl playmat is set down and upon that sits the transporter. One of the transporter pads lights up, and the one to the far right has the transporter tube. Once you place a figure on a small base and set it onto the transporter, you drop the shell over the figure and snap it down.

You can either activate the tube with the button on the top collar or by using Scotty's control panel. The light goes on and reveals your figure with a sound effect added for good measure.

>The light dims and the figure "disappears" (This is a very cool effect). You can then take the shell off the transporter and your figure has gone. Then you can set your tube onto another surface ("world"), once more lighting the tube to show your figure re-appearing, and press two other buttons on the top collar. When you remove the shell, the figure is left standing there. You can reverse the proceedure on the transpter to return your crewman to the Enterprise.
This is a simple yet effective effect. Kids should have a blast with it!

Scotty figure is included. Uhura and Nero figures as stated before will contain additional parts for this playset.
Retail prices on the playsets is about $27.00, but when you figure in the price for a figure included, it's really only about 20 bucks.
Great value in my book.
I am hoping that this line could be expanded to include some vehicles like a shuttle, and possibly some additional villians, or other species of aliens.

SYMBIOTE STUDIOS SAM AND MAX POLYRESIN STATUE REVIEW! 3/02/09

Each statue is made of high quality polystone not plastic. The base is hand numbered with the edition size and number of the piece.

This is a large, funny statue. Sam holding his oversized revolver with a mouse sticking his head out of the barrel, while Max trains his automatic at a shivering mouse holding a hot dog over his head.

The base is shaped like a police shield and the parts sit easily into the depressions on the surface. The base is a matte black color with white inscription on the underside where you can read the name of the statue as well as the edition size of 1000.

Assembly is very simple and the parts fit together easily, there are no instructions supplied, but by looking at the box art, there should be no problem putting Sam and Max together in a couple of minutes.

Some of the resin parts use metal posts to attach to other parts.Tha parts are easily disassembled, so if you really want to keep it from coming apart when moving it. I would put a dab of hot glue on the parts when assembling. Otherwise they stay together well, and the fit and finish are very nice.

The paint ops are nice and clean, although cartoonish, are very nicely done. Subtle airbrushing
helps this along, but their not historical characters, but gaming or comic characters. Sam is dressed in a gray suit and hat, and Max is his normal white bunny suit.

This is a nice big statue which is hard to believe given its 75.00 price tag. This statue deserves a place on your shelf A great statue from Symbiote Studios

KOTOBUKIYA: ArtFX THEATER INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM STATUE! 2/25/09

A very cool statue that combines tons of memorable moments from the film into one
very easily assembled statue.

Great use of forced perspective gives added depth
to this iconic character and his friends as they are chased throughout the Temple of Doom!

In addition to Indiana Jones swinging on his whip, is Mola Ram holding a flaming heart in the air, and a small version of Short Round and Willie in the coal tender followed in the distance by two of Mola's guards.
Kili stands above them all casting another poor victim into the firey hell of lava.

The model assembles very quickly and holds up well even to being moved. The paint ops are better than average, and the many iconic scenes and action brings this movie back to life!

Details like the belt of "arms" that Kili has strapped across his waist, and the necklace of skulls around his neck pop out as you examine the statue up close. Indie is decked out in his movie accurate garb along wiht his shoulder bag and Mola Ram looks especially manical.
The statue is served up in a golden bowl that seems fitting for the larger than life treasure hunter, Dr. Jones.
If your a fan of the film, you'll love adding this fine collectible to your stash.

SYMBIOTE STUDIOS: JESSICA CHOBOT STATUE! Rating: * * * * 1/2 2/21/09
Jessica was first noticed by the video-game/techie scene as "the girl who licked the Sony PSP" back in 2005.

In 2006 she began working for IGN.com as their main video host and as a staff writer.
Her freelance work includes a regular contributor position on Maxim Sirius Radio's "The Stretch Show", and as game advisor on The Daily Habit for Fuel TV.
She was named the 88th most desirable woman of 2008 by AskMen magazine.
Current collaborations include an anime-style collectible figurine in development with Symbiote Studios, a representative of J!NX.com women's apparel line and a co-writer's credit alongside Tron director, Steven Lisberger, for "Soul Code."
Symbiote Studios is the little company that could. Last year's Dr. Tran and Stykman statues were a breath of fresh air to the collectible market, and now along with a Sam and Max statue (that I will soon be reviewing) comes the Autumn Beauty: Jessica Chobot "J!NX" polystone statue!
Decked out with a J!NX tee-shirt that hardly covers her fine belly and jeans that are a couple of sizes too small, Jessica clutches her game controller with a devilish grin filled with mischief.
This statue comes sculpted in one piece, standing 10" tall, is limited to 250 pieces worldwide. Quite a short run considering how popular Chobot is in the geek-o-verse.
Symbiote Studios packaging is an open window design, with an inner clear clamshell protecting the statue. This makes it easy for those that wish to display the statue in its box as you can easily see most of Ms. Chobot.
But you must open her up and show off all her fine attributes.
Paint apps are pretty standard for this piece. There is a bit of sheen to the J!NX decal but it's not that noticable.
The blue jeans have some nice airbrushed shadowing effects and fine paint gradation that give a believable faded look to the denim. Her "tramp stamp" tattoo is emblazoned on her backside
Game cartridges and cola cans litter the ground around her feet. Each piece is individually numbered under the base.
The sculpt is a simple anime style that cute and cartoonish, and the exaggerated proportions draw your eyes to Jessica's considerable assets.
Overall this is a very nice piece, sexy but not sleazy by any means. Symbiote Studios are making a name for themselves in small but very strong steps.
We will watch their progress with much enthussiasm.
